ESTELLA KATZENELLENBOGEN IN DER PROVENIENZFORSCHUNG

Description

Estella Katzenellenbogen (1886–1991) was one of the most important collectors and patrons of fine art in the first half of the 20th century. She is also known as a collector of works by Paul Klee, but the disposition of her collection through exhibitions, sales, and donations currently raises question in both provenance research and gender studies. In my article,

I will briefly outline her collection, then using primary sources, I will describe her period of exile in Switzerland and the USA, which has not yet been sufficiently researched. Finally, I will point to a future possibility for provenance research, using the example of Sängerin der komischen Oper, 1927, 10.
