Guidelines for the classification, diagnosis, and treatment of hypertensive disorders (including preeclampsia) are available from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG [ 1 ]).

In 2017, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) published new guidelines for evaluating high blood pressure (BP). When determining hypertension, they lowered the blood pressure limits as follows:

Normal < 120/80 mm Hg. Art.

Elevated: 120-129/< 80 mm Hg. Art.

Stage 1 hypertension: 130-139 / 80-89 mm Hg. Art.

Stage 2 hypertension: ≥ 140/90 mmHg. Art.
