Type Locality: " India ", restricted by Thomas (1911 a:134) to "Benna Mts., Laristan, S. Persia ".
Vernacular Names: Striped Hyena.

Distribution: Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kenya, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudia Arabia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen.
Conservation: U.S. ESA and IUCN – Data Deficient as H. hyaena barbara, otherwise Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: Reviewed by Rieger (1981) and Jenks and Werdelin (1998). Pocock (1934 d) and Jenks and Werdelin (1998) argued that at present neither morphological nor molecular studies have supported the recognition of subspecies. Synonyms according to Rieger (1981) and Jenks and Werdelin (1998).
