Heteromys (Heteromys) australis Thomas 1901, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 7, 7: 194.

Type Locality: Ecuador, Esmeraldas Prov., Cachabi River, San Javier, below Cachabi.

Vernacular Names: Southern Spiny Pocket Mouse.

Subspecies::

Subspecies Heteromys (Heteromys) australis subsp. australis Thomas 1901

Subspecies Heteromys (Heteromys) australis subsp. conscius Goldman 1913

Subspecies Heteromys (Heteromys) australis subsp. pacificus Pearson 1939

Distribution: E Panama south to SW Colombia and NW Ecuador, both slopes of the Cordillera Occidental and Cordillera Central and western slope of the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia. Disjunct population present in Cordillera de Mérida in Venezuela (Anderson and Soriano, 1999; Anderson, 1999 [2000]).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Subgenus Heteromys. Subspecies listed by Williams et al. (1993) and distribution mapped by Anderson (1999 [2000]).
