Lagostomus maximus (Desmarest 1817)

[Dipus] maximus Desmarest 1817, Nouv. Dict. Hist. Nat., Nouv. ed., Vol. 13: 117.

Type Locality: Unknown; possibly from pampas of Buenos Aires, Argentina; see Cabrera (1961).

Vernacular Names: Argentine Plains Viscacha.

Subspecies::

Subspecies Lagostomus maximus subsp. maximus Desmarest 1817

Subspecies Lagostomus maximus subsp. inmollis Thomas 1910

Subspecies Lagostomus maximus subsp. petilidens Hollister 1914

Distribution: N, C, and E Argentina, S and W Paraguay, SE Bolivia.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Reviewed by Jackson et al. (1996). Karyptype has 2n=56 and FN=110 (George and Weir, 1974).
