Description

Neurotrichus gibbsii (Baird 1858)

[Urotrichus] gibbsii Baird 1858, Mammalia, in: Repts. U. S. Expl. Surv., Vol. 8, 1: 76.

Type Locality: USA, Washington, Pierce Co., "Naches Pass, 4,500 ft. " (1,372 m).

Vernacular Names: Shrew-mole.

Subspecies::

Subspecies Neurotrichus gibbsii subsp. gibbsii Baird 1858

Subspecies Neurotrichus gibbsii subsp. hyacinthinus Bangs 1897

Subspecies Neurotrichus gibbsii subsp. minor Dalquest and Burgner 1941

Distribution: SW British Columbia (Canada) to WC California (USA).

Conservation: IUCN 2000 – Not listed.

Discussion: Hall (1981:67) and Yates (in Wilson and Ruff, 1999) listed hyacinthinus and minor as subspecies. Reviewed by Carraway and Verts (1991 b, Mammalian Species No. 387). Karyotype has 2n = 38, FN = 72 (Yates and Schmidly, 1975).
