Myosorex varius

Description

Myosorex varius (Smuts 1832)

[Sorex] varius Smuts 1832, Enumer. Mamm. Capensium: 108.

Type Locality: South Africa, Cape of Good Hope, Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth).

Vernacular Names: Forest Shrew.

Synonyms: Myosorex pondoensis Roberts 1946; Myosorex transvaalensis Roberts 1924.

Distribution: South Africa, from West and Eastern Cape across Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State to Mpumalanga and Gauteng Provinces; also Lesotho and Swaziland (Baxter, in litt., 2004).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Revised by Meester (1958). Karyotype (2n = 42) differs from all other southern African Myosorex (Wolhuter, in Smithers, 1983). For synonyms see Heim de Balsac and Meester (1977).
