Sylvisorex howelli Jenkins 1984

Sylvisorex howelli Jenkins 1984, Bull. Brit. Mus. (Nat. Hist.) Zool., 47: 65.

Type Locality: Tanzania, Uluguru Mtns, Morningside.

Vernacular Names: Howell's Forest Shrew.

Subspecies::

Subspecies Sylvisorex howelli subsp. howelli Jenkins 1984

Subspecies Sylvisorex howelli subsp. usambarensis Hutterer 1986

Distribution: Eastern Arc Mtns (Tanzania): W and E Usambara, Nguru and Uluguru Mtns (Stanley et al., 2000 b).

Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.

Discussion: Includes usambarensis, which may represent a distinct species; see Hutterer (1986 b). However, the variation among the five populations has to be studied before taxonomic conclusions can be drawn.
