Description

Elephantulus rupestris (A. Smith 1831)

[Macroscelides] rupestris A. Smith 1831, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1831: 11.

Type Locality: South Africa or Namibia, mountains near mouth of Orange River.

Vernacular Names: Western Rock Elephant Shrew.

Synonyms: Elephantulus barlowi Roberts 1938; Elephantulus gordoniensis Roberts 1946; Elephantulus kobosensis Roberts 1938; Elephantulus montanus Lundholm 1955; Elephantulus okombahensis Roberts 1946; Elephantulus tarri Roberts 1938; Elephantulus typus (Lesson 1830); Elephantulus vandami Roberts 1924.

Distribution: W Namibia; SW and SC South Africa.

Conservation: IUCN – Least Concern.

Discussion: No subspecies are recognized.
