Description

Elephantulus edwardii (A. Smith 1839)

[Macroscelides] edwardii A. Smith 1839, Illustr. Zool. S. Afr. Mamm.: pl. 14.

Type Locality: South Africa, Western Cape Province, Oliphants River.

Vernacular Names: Cape Elephant Shrew.

Synonyms: Elephantulus capensis Roberts 1924; Elephantulus edwardsii (Sclater 1901); Elephantulus karoensis Roberts 1938.

Distribution: W and SC South Africa.

Conservation: IUCN – Least Concern.

Discussion: Corbet and Hanks (1968:97) suggested there might be a western and eastern subspecies.
