Gorilla beringei Matschie 1903, Sber. Ges. naturf. Fr. Berlin: 257.

Type Locality: Rwanda, Mt. Sabinyo.

Vernacular Names: Eastern Gorilla.

Subspecies::

Subspecies Gorilla beringei subsp. beringei Matschie 1903

Subspecies Gorilla beringei subsp. graueri Matschie 1914

Distribution: N and E Dem. Rep. Congo, SW Uganda, N Rwanda.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I and U.S. ESA – Endangered as included in G. gorilla; IUCN – Critically Endangered as G. g. beringei, Endangered as G. g. graueri.

Discussion: Separated as a full species by Groves (2001 c).
