Macaca maura H. R. Schinz 1825, in: Cuvier, Das Thierreich: 257.
Type Locality: Indonesia, Sulawesi Selatan.
Vernacular Names: Moor Macaque.
Synonyms: Macaca cuvieri (Fischer 1829); Macaca fusco-ater (Schinz 1844); Macaca hypomelas (Matschie 1901); Macaca inornatus (Gray 1866); Macaca majuscula Hooijer 1950.
Distribution: S Sulawesi, south of Tempe Depression (Indonesia).
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: M. nemestrina species group. Type species of Gymnopyga; see Fooden (1969:79). Included in nigra by Corbet and Hill (1980:87).
