Margaretamys beccarii

Description

Margaretamys beccarii (Jentink 1880)

[Mus] beccarii Jentink 1880, Notes Leyden Mus., 2: 11.

Type Locality: Indonesia, Sulawesi, NE peninsula, Menado-Langowan.

Vernacular Names: Spiny Lowland Margaretamys.

Synonyms: Margaretamys leucopus (Jentink 1879); Margaretamys thysanurus (Sody 1932).

Distribution: NE peninsula and C Sulawesi in lowland tropical evergreen rain forest, near sea level to 1000 m.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: History of incorrect taxonomic allocations of beccarii recorded by Musser (1971 e, 1981 b). Insufficient samples exist to determine any morphometric or qualitative differences between populations in central core of the island and the NE peninsula. The only one of the three Margaretamys with spinous pelage.
