Distribution: C British Columbia (Canada) south to C California east to C Montana and W Wyoming (USA).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Neotamias. Reviewed by Sutton (1992, Mammalian Species No. 390). DNA variation and introgressive hybridization between T. amoenus and T. ruficaudus reported by Good et al. (2003) and Demboski and Sullivan (2003).
