Myrmecophaga tridactyla Linnaeus 1758, Syst. Nat., 10th ed., Vol. 1: 35.
Type Locality: "America meridionali;" restricted to Brazil, Pernambuco, Pernambuco, by Thomas (1911 a).
Vernacular Names: Giant Anteater.
Synonyms: Myrmecophaga iubata Weid 1826.

Distribution: Belize and Guatemala through South America to Uruguay and the Gran Chaco of Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Vulnerable.
