Discussion: Included in Pipistrellus by some authors (e.g., Bates and Harrison, 1997; Ellerman and Morrison-Scott, 1951; Koopman, 1993, 1994; Sinha, 1999), but see Corbet and Hill (1992). Considered congeneric with Scotoecus by Menu (1987), but see Hill and Harrison (1987) and Corbet and Hill (1992). Phylogenetic relationships were discussed by Volleth and Heller (1994).
