URABANISATION AND MICRO CLIMATE-CASE STUDY OF PUNE

The term urbanization refers to a process whereby a traditionally rural bound community, wholly or partially, moves to adopt a different pattern of life where activities are basically non-primary. Urbanization in India began to accelerate after, 1991 due to the country's adoption of a mixed economy, which gave rise to the development of the private sector. In India new cities are emerging whereas existing cities are growing horizontally and vertically. Due to lack or poor planning, majority of the cities of India are facing various environmental, economic and social issues. Construction activities in cities results disappearance of vegetation cover and wetlands. This may results in formation of Urban Heat Island (UHI). Large build-up areas, concentration of anthropogenic activities and multistoried buildings makes urban area warmer then surrounding country side. Within the UHI researchers also identified the areas of lower temperature and they termed it as Urban Cool Islands (UCI). As per the studies in different cities of the world it is realized that UCI can mitigate negative impact of UHIs. So the town planners can consider the creation of artificial UCIs in those areas associated with warmer temperature in the cities.
