El maestro Caspar Pflug, y su pugna con el gremio madrileño de maestros de coches a comienzos del siglo XIX

Este artículo analiza la trayectoria de Caspar Pflug, maestro de hacer coches llegado a Madrid desde París a finales del siglo XVIII, y estudia su conflicto con el gremio madrileño de maestros carroceros, que intentó impedir su establecimiento independiente pese al nuevo marco legislativo más flexible vigente entonces. A partir de la documentación conservada en el Archivo General de Simancas, el estudio reconstruye el proceso administrativo y gremial, deteniéndose en el examen profesional al que Pflug fue sometido y en el dibujo de una berlina-cupé inglesa, pieza notable por su calidad técnica y relevancia para la definición de su competencia. El artículo pone de relieve la resistencia corporativa, las tensiones entre tradición gremial y apertura reformista, así como la importancia de Pflug como introductor de innovaciones en el diseño de carruajes, apreciadas por una clientela distinguida. El estudio concluye subrayando el papel de este maestro, hasta ahora inédito en la historiografía, dentro del panorama de las artes suntuarias madrileñas de comienzos del siglo XIX.
Abstract (English)
This article examines the career of Caspar Pflug, a coach-builder who arrived in Madrid from Paris in the late eighteenth century, and focuses on his conflict with the Madrid coach-building guild, which attempted to prevent him from setting up his own workshop despite a recently introduced, more liberal legal framework. Based on documentation preserved in the General Archive of Simancas, the study reconstructs the guild procedure, highlighting the professional examination imposed on Pflug and the drawing of an English coupé-berlin carriage, a remarkable piece that demonstrates his technical expertise. The article reveals the corporate resistance opposed to foreign or independent masters, the tension between traditional guild control and emerging reformist tendencies, and Pflug’s role as an innovator whose work attracted a select circle of clients. It concludes by emphasizing the previously unacknowledged significance of this craftsman within the landscape of Madrid’s early nineteenth-century decorative and industrial arts.
