LERMONTOV'S POEM «A STAR» («AND THERE AFAR») TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH AND ARMENIAN

The article examines the Armenian (done by Gurgen Boryan) and English (done by Lyudmila Purgina) translations of one of the three variations created by Lermontov on the theme of Byron’s poem «Sun of the Sleepless». The original («And there afar»), translated into Armenian, became several lines longer and was subject to a rather free interpretation. The structural and semantic analysis of both the original and the English text showed that the translator, having conveyed the size and the rhyme of the original, ignored its punctuation. In both translations, the structure, metrics and lexics are to one degree or another changed.
