Convergent trends in the external trade of transport services between Ukraine and the EU

The Relevance of the research topic is associated with the fulfillment of the conditions of the
Association Agreement and the attainment of candidate status for EU accession, which brings to the
forefront the assessment of convergence in the external trade of transport services between Ukraine
and the EU during the years 2010–2022.
The subject of the research involves analyzing the export and import of transport services by
modes of transport between Ukraine and the EU.
The purpose of the article is to investigate convergent trends in the external trade of transport
services in the context of Ukraine’s integration into the EU’s transport system.
Research methods: comparative analysis, method of structural and logical analysis, processing of
statistical data, generalization, graphical representation and data visualization.
Work results. The structure of the export and import of transport services by modes of transport
between Ukraine and the EU has been examined; the dynamics of the growth rates of export and
import volumes of transport services by modes of transport between Ukraine and the EU up to the
previous year have been assessed; the reasons for the absence of convergent trends between Ukraine
and the EU in the export of railway transport services have been identified.
Field of application of results. The research findings can be applied in the practical activities of
state and local authorities.
Conclusions. Positive dynamics in the growth of import volumes of transport services during 2010–
2022 are observed, particularly for road and maritime transport services. The export of transport
services demonstrated a decline, especially for maritime, railway, and air transport services, with the
exception of road transport, whose export of transport services showed a slight increase, expanding
its share among other modes of transport by 8% during 2012–2021. In this context, the shares of
export for maritime and railway transport services show a tendency to gradually decrease, thereby
redirecting transportation to the less environmentally friendly road transport.
