Redescription. Adult. Male (Fig. 3A): Body length 18.0–25.0 mm, humeral width 3.5–6.0 mm. Body generally black, except elytra burnt orange to crimson, pronotum black to reddish black (Fig. 1), scutellum black, tan to red (Fig. 1), mandibular apices and anterior margin of clypeus reddish brown. In some individuals, head (including antennae), femora, and tibiae uneven in color, dark red to reddish black. Body densely covered with yellow-brown semi-erect short setae, but setation tawny on dorsal surface of head and black portion of pronotum, and orange-red on red portion of pronotum and elytra.
Head (Fig. 3B) with small, moderately dense punctures, diameter of punctures less than spacing between punctures, each puncture unisetose. Frons slightly convex, with a transverse depression across interocular surface; cranial pit large, shallow, scutiform, with dense yellow-brown setation inside, edges nitid and complete. Vertex smooth, slightly convex. Compound eyes moderate, widely spaced (OI=44.2–53.2). Genae strongly angulate. Antennae (Fig. 3D) longer than half length of elytra; scape long and stout, enlarged distally, nearly subequal to length of flagellomere I; pedicel shortest; flagellomeres I–III gradually shortened, III–VI similar in length, VII–IX gradually shortened, rami of III–X gradually elongated, terminal flagellomere longest.
Pronotum (Figs. 1A–C; 3A) nearly rectangular, with angular sub-basal projections, wider than long (PL/PW: 0.56–0.81); punctures dense, unisetose; disc with a longitudinal, mesal furrow and transverse depression on each side of meson. Scutellum longer than wide. Each elytron with three distinct longitudinal ridges. Tibiae slender, tibial spurs short. Prothoracic tarsomere V longest, I second, II–IV subequal in length; mesothoracic tarsomeres I and V similar in length, II–IV slightly shorter, subequal in length; metathoracic tarsomere I longest, followed by IV, II and III gradually shorter. Pretarsal claws simple.
Posterior margins of abdominal sternites III–VI subparallel, that of VII obtusely and shallowly emarginate and VIII acutely V-shaped, emarginate. Parameres approximately as long as phallobase in lateral view (Fig. 3G), fused along basal 9/10 and depressed around inner margins of apices in dorsal view (Fig. 3F); penis (Fig. 3H, I) tapered, broadest in middle, apex pointed in dorsal view and enlarged in lateral view, with short, paired basal struts.
Female: Body length 17.0–24.0 mm, humeral width 3.5–6.0 mm. Head (Fig. 3C) without cranial pit; antennal rami distinctly shorter than those of males (Fig. 3E); OI (40.4–55.3) with wider range than males. Posterior margins of abdominal sternites VII–VIII almost straight. Other features largely as in males.
Larva. Mature larvae (Fig. 4A) attain lengths (mesal labral apex to apices of urogomphi) of 26.0–41.0 mm and widths (across widest portion of abdominal segment VIII) of 4.0–6.0 mm. Body orthosomatic with sides subparallel, amber in color, moderately sclerotized, mandibles and urogomphal plate heavily sclerotized, orange-brown to dark brown; overall surface with very few scattered long yellow setae; thoracic and abdominal terga each with a weak parabasal ridge.
Head (Fig. 4B–C) oval, prognathous, mouthparts retracted but with mandibles and maxillary apices protruding. Epicranial suture lyriform with stem short, frontal arms extending anteriolaterally to bases of antennal insertions. Four stemmata on each side, around antennal insertions, symmetrical arrangement. Antennal insertions fully exposed, each antenna 3-segmented, filiform; antennomere I 0.05–0.08 longer than II and III, tapering; I constricted at mid-length, I and II slightly enlarged to apex; III thinnest, apex sharp. Labrum semicircular, slightly acuminate anteriomesally. Mandibles well sclerotized, asymmetrical, mola of each mandible well developed, left mandible bearing a prominent molar tooth and three apical teeth, right mandible with two apical teeth. Maxillae each with 1-segmented cardo which is diagonally folded upward upon itself toward stipes and thus appearing 2-segmented; a well-developed, undivided, pad-like maxillary articulating area; ventral surface of stipes bearing few scattered spiniform setae; each maxillary palpus 3-segmented, filiform, palpomere I stubby and tapering, I–II with short thick yellow setae. Mentum inverted trapezoidal; submentum rectangular, with a pair of setae at center; ligula well developed, with sparse short setae; each labial palpus 2-segmented, palpomere I 1.65× as long as II and stronger than II. Hypostomal rods well developed, divergent, extension lines form right angles, subparallel to gular suture.
Thorax (Fig. 4A) flattened, well developed, 3-segmented. Prothorax (Fig. 4B, C) subrectangular. Meso- and metathorax arc-shaped on both sides, nearly teardrop-shaped. Legs (Fig. 4A–C) 5-segmented, vestiture consisting of sparse, short setae.
Abdomen (Fig. 4A) with 10 relatively flat segments, segments I–VIII with curved lateral margins, segments I–VII subequal in length and width, VIII longest and twice of VII in length, sides round (Fig. 5). In ventral view, VIII (Fig. 5B) with a well developed, inverted U-shaped posterior emargination and a narrow, strongly acuminte, apical tooth-like process bilaterally. Tergite IX (Fig. 5) strongly sclerotized, with acutely rounded lateral lobes extending forward on base of lateral margin; anterior margin U-shaped, concave; surface of urogomphal plate bearing numerous well-developed callosities, several setigerous calli, and sparse, long setae at edges; in particular, one pair of calli on dorsolateral surface and another pair at base of urogomphi; urogomphi elongate, straight, slightly divergent, tapering and acuminate apically; ventral surface of urogomphal plate depressed at center, forming a narrowing longitudinal groove caudally. Urogomphal plate possessing a heavily sclerotized, inverted sub-triangulate urogomphal lip (Figs. 4D, 5), ventral surface smooth, apex tapering; two deep urogomphal pits (Fig. 4D) between urogomphi, with apparent parallel rugulae. Anus (Fig. 5B) positioned at junction of sternites IX and X. Sternite X with uneven rectangular edges.
Paired spiracles oval, located at ventrolateral margin along anterior end of mesothoracic laterotergite, dorsolateral margin of abdominal tergite I, ventrolateral margins of abdominal laterotergites II–VII, and distal about 1/3 (0.32) of length of laterotergite VIII ventrolaterally (Fig. 5B).
