Global Entrepreneurship Monitor versus Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics: comparing their intellectual structures

Abstract (English)

In the past 15 years, two international observatories have been intensively studying entrepreneurship using empirical studies with different methodologies: General Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED). Both projects have generated a considerable volume of scientific production, and their intellectual structures are worth analyzing. The current work is an exploratory study of the knowledge base of the articles generated by each of these two observatories and published in prestigious journals. The main difference found is that the predominant theoretical frameworks used are the economic approach and institutional theory in GEM, and the demographic and cognitive approaches in PSED. The value added of this work lies in its novel characterization of the intellectual structure of entrepreneurship according to the academic production of these two initiatives. The results may be of interest to the managers and members of these observatories, as well as to academics, researchers, sponsors and policymakers interested in entrepreneurship.

Abstract (Spanish)

En los últimos 15 años, dos observatorios internacionales han estudiado intensamente el espíritu empresarial mediante estudios empíricos con diferentes metodologías: General Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) y Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED). Ambos proyectos han generado un volumen considerable de producción científica, y merece la pena analizar sus estructuras intelectuales. El presente trabajo es un estudio exploratorio de la base de conocimiento de los artículos generados por cada uno de estos dos observatorios y publicados en revistas de prestigio. La principal diferencia encontrada es que los marcos teóricos predominantes utilizados son el enfoque económico y la teoría institucional en el GEM, y los enfoques demográfico y cognitivo en el PSED. El valor añadido de este trabajo radica en su novedosa caracterización de la estructura intelectual del emprendimiento según la producción académica de estas dos iniciativas. Los resultados pueden ser de interés para los gestores y miembros de estos observatorios, así como para académicos, investigadores, patrocinadores y responsables políticos interesados en el espíritu empresarial.

Abstract (Mandarin Chinese)

过去15年来,两个国际观察站通过不同方法的实证研究,密切研究创业精神:一是全球创业监测(GEM),另一个是创业动态面板研究(PSED)。这两个项目产生了大量的科学成果,其知识结构值得分析。本文是对这两个观察站产生的文章的知识基础进行探索性研究,并发表在知名期刊上。发现的主要差异在于,GEM 中主要使用的理论框架是经济学方法和制度理论,而 PSED 中主要使用的是人口统计学和认知方法。本文的附加值在于根据这两个项目的学术成果对创业精神的知识结构进行了新颖的描述。这些结果可能对这些观察站的管理者和成员、学术界、研究人员、赞助商以及对创业感兴趣的政策制定者有所帮助。
