KG Schachau, MG Oberndorf an der Melk

The archaeological site is located immediately north of the intersection of the country roads L5314 and L6141 on a field used for agriculture, situated on flat terrain. The field is bordered to the north directly by the Ofenbach river, to the east and west by neighboring parcels, and to the south by the aforementioned country roads. The objects were discovered on January 20, 2020, following plowing activities.

9 pottery fragments (Fig. 1), 10 architectural terracotta fragments (Fig. 2, bricks, tubuli, tegulae, Roman), 13 metal finds (Fig. 3 a and b): 1 bronze casting fragment (Roman?), 1 Roman key end piece (bronze, 2nd to 4th century AD), 1 ornamental pinhead (bronze, Roman?), 1 curtain rod end piece? (modern era), 8 coins (modern era), 1 lapel pin in the shape of the Lower Austria state coat of arms (modern era).

The characteristic Roman-era composition of the finds, in conjunction with the location of the site, suggests the presence of a Roman estate or similar. Additional finds from this exact area, as well as a description of road construction work carried out in the 1960s which might have revealed ancient architectural structures, are mentioned in E.
