Ammothea hilgendorfi

Description

Note on Ammothea hilgendorfi (Böhm, 1879)

Twenty-three males, 33 females and 6 juveniles collected from Pingtan and Fuqing (Fujian, China) were lost during a laboratory renovation and we could only include record of the species here based on preliminary microscopic examination. The slender chelifore scape without any trace of chela was the most salient feature to differ this species from other Ammothea spp.

A. hilgendorfi was commonly observed from low tide areas to shallow seas along the coast of China and usually found in attached communities (Huang 2008; Huang & Cai 1981). All of the specimens were sorted from fouling organisms and were taken from the panels laid in the 0 or 5 m deep water over three months. Almost all males were ovigerous.
