Description
Burmannia subcoelestis Gagnepain (1907: 464)
Citation in the protologue: “Indo- Chine.— Laos meridional: basin du Se-moun, vers Moulu-prey, janvier 1876, n˚ 255 [Harmand]”
First-step lectotype: Inadvertently designated by Jonker (1938) citing “Type: Harmand 255 from Laos, in herb. P, duplicates in herb. U”
Second-step lectotype (designated here):—Indo Chine, Laos meridional: bassin du Se-moun, Moulu-prey, January 1876, Harmand 255 (P, barcode P00738856 [digital image!], available on https://science.mnhn.fr/institution/mnhn/collection/p/item/p00738856), Fig. 3). Isolectotypes: P (barcode P00738858 [image!]) & U (barcode U0254172 [image!]). Possible residual syntype: P (barcode P00738855 [image!]).
Notes: There are three relevant specimens at P. Two specimens, with barcodes P00738856! and P00738858! possess the label ‘ Expedition du Dr Harmand en Indo- Chine 1875–77, Bassin du Se-Moun (Laos meridional) ’ and the remaining one, barcode P00738855! possesses it as ‘ Indo-Chine. Voyage du Dr Harmand ’. That is, the specimen barcode P00738855 does not have proper collection locality and year of collection in its label. Although the exact location and date of this collection are unknown, we can’t rule out the possibility that this specimen may also be the original material (Pers. comm.—Dr. Subir Bandhyopadhyay). In addition, P database entered metadata of this specimen as matching to the other two specimens. In the inadvertent first step lectotypification, Jonker (1938) cited ‘ Type: Harmand 255 from Laos, in herb. P, duplicates in herb. U ”. Jonker (1938) has clearly mentioned the collection locality as ‘Laos’. That is, it reliably matches the first two specimens, with barcodes P00738856 and P00738858. Therefore, one of the specimens (barcode number P00738856), which bears a slip of fine illustration of floral parts (most probably drawn by Gagnepain), is here designated as the second-step lectotype of the name. We traced a reliable duplicate of P-specimens at U (barcode U0254172!), as rightly mentioned by Jonker (1938).
