The first steps of the evolution to life on prebiotic Earth were most likely taken by autocatalytic reaction networks capable of producing organic compounds at an exponential rate. Without regulatory mechanisms at work, autocatalytic cycles A and B competing for the same resource X are bound to exclude each other. We show that competitive exclusion can be avoided and autocatalytic coexistence maintained through simple generic chemical mechanisms.
