Spongia officinalis subsp. tubulifera var. rotunda Hyatt 1877

Authors/Creators

Description

Spongia officinalis subsp. tubulifera var. rotunda Hyatt, 1877

Spongia officinalis subsp. tubulifera var. rotunda Hyatt, 1877: 513, pl. 15 fig. 1, pl. 16 fig. 15.

Euspongia officinalis var. rotunda; Von Lendenfeld 1889: 269; Topsent 1896: 119 (mentioned only).

Spongia tubulifer a; Wiedenmayer 1977: 55; Van Soest 1978: 11.

Hyatt’s name is not an available name (as it has a fourth name, ICZN art. 45.5). I propose to assign this material from the Caribbean region to Spongia (Spongia) tubulifera Lamarck, 1814. in accordance with Wiedenmayer and Van Soest. Topsent’s (1896) record from the W coast of France is puzzling.
