Design and management of covered verandas for optimal use

This document describes how an example of a good welfare practice, the covered verandas, should be designed and managed for optimal use of broilers and laying hens. The document describes what a covered veranda is and addresses the benefits to animal welfare of having access to a covered veranda, including that it may promote use of an outdoor area, if available. Information is also found on how to enrich the veranda, the importance of access from an early age and on how to best design a veranda and important aspects of the popholes between the house and the veranda.
