Description

Power vs. Authority. Positive and negative aspects, interactions and their mutual relationship

Kristian Yasin in the chapter entitled Power vs. Authority. Positive and negative aspects, interactions and their mutual relationship proposes an analysis of such phenomena as power and authority. Power, that is, influencing the actions of others or one’s own, has always been present in the culture of mankind and has manifested itself many times in various ways, ranging from tribal leaders and prophets to modern managers of companies or enterprises. One of the significant changes is the emergence of mass media in the form of the Internet, television or radio. However, many rulers lost their driving force, which was most often caused by a loss of authority.
The factors that divided the phenomena of power and authority were quite varied, and moreover, they had a certain symbiosis with them. The given division becomes the most visible in contemporary systems and political regimes, which often educated power through all kinds of media that were used in a way that was beneficial to society or negative and aimed at keeping the ruler in power. Also, the media themselves chose completely different development paths and goals, which had a huge impact on their recipients. Many foreign and Polish researchers, such as H. Fayola, M. Weber or J. Kołakowska, studied the phenomena of power and authority and showed specific features of a person possessing one of these factors or the process itself, and tried to define them using their presence in many spheres and areas of human life. In addition, practical research was conducted, such as the Stanley Milgram experiment.
The current digitization, globalization, democratization and individualization undermine the sense of the existence of such a creature as authority in society, as it could take the form of a controller of free processes, but at the same time it is a „helmsman”; and directs power, which is an indispensable guardian of the stability of these processes.
The article consists of an introduction, two chapters titled Typology and the relationship of power with authority and Interactions of power and authority and the effects of a given phenomenon on the basis of various regimes and political systems, as well as a summary and source of citations.

Keywords: authority, power, role of the media, positive aspects of power, typology of authority, interaction
