Description

The panel is situated of an outcrop of schist bedrock in a field of improved pasture on the SW sloping hillside about 255m to the E of Mecknoch farmsteading. There are views across the West Kyle of Bute towards the island of Inchmarnock as well as to Arran and Kintyre. There is a further second panel with 2 cupmarks about 4m to the E near the top edge of the outcrop (Mecknoch 1, ScRAP ID 2239). Turf on top of the outcrop may obscure further carvings. Mecknoch 2, Canmore 40264, SCRAP 431 is also nearby with a penney farthing shaped carving. The panel comprises a small ledge measuring 1.3 x 0.7m jutting out at ground level from the bedrock outcrop with a maximum height of 1.5m above ground level. The rock surface is rough, comprising hard, fine grained schist with quartz veins and bedding planes visible. There is 1 small cupmark measuring 1.8cm in diameter with a depth of 0.3cm.
