This is Chapter Four of my book Romans 9 and the Story Paul Was Telling. By this stage in my book, I have now established that Paul in Romans 9 was retelling the story of Israel and making it relevant for his ministry situation. This chapter examines the Exodus events where God hardened Pharaoh's heart and where God revealed his glory to Mose. These are the events Paul was referring when he made his quotes from Exodus 33 and Exodus 9. In this chapter I continue my thesis that what Paul was talking about had nothing to do with what would become known as Calvinistic thought. Calvinistic arguments are an anachronism imported into the text when Paul was dealing with other issues in the first century.
