Advances in performance-based earthquake early warning in Europe

Authors/Creators

Description

The engineering applications of earthquake early warning (EEW) for Europe, developed in previous projects (i.e.,

SAFER and REAKT) are based on regional seismic networks, since these are able to provide, in real-time, probabilistic

estimates of magnitude and source-to-site distance, which are the basic elements of performance-based early warning

(PBEEW). An alternative and complementary approach is to develop structure-specific early warning systems based on

hardware placed nearby or within the structure served by the EEW system. This is referred to as on-site EEW (Figure

17). This can be combined with the use of SHM (T4.4) to update the vulnerability of the system (T4.2) to modify the

parameters of the early warning system during a seismic sequence. In fact, a mainshock-damaged structure should have

a different warning threshold with respect to an intact one. Here we will develop, together with Task 4.3, the conceptual

framework and necessary software that can be applied in existing structures in WP6.
