Description

Dohrniphora avispasensis sp. n.

(Figs 63–64)

Species recognition. This species is recognized by the combination of an elongate group of peglike setae with a small, more distal rounded lobe.

Description. Note: colors have been distorted in this specimen due to air drying. Body length: 2.19 mm. Head: Frons dark brown, second row of setae straight. Flagellomere 1 oval, apically pointed, orange. Palpus of normal size, presumably yellow (difficult to discern the color in the air-dried specimen). Thorax: Scutum brown. Scutellum light brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta one-half length of posterior seta. Pleuron light brown to yellow. Costa 0.5 wing length. Halter yellow. Legs yellowish-brown. Forecoxa in lateral view yellowish-brown. Foretibia with 4 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres 1–3 enlarged, inflated. Midcoxa brown. Hind coxa yellowish-brown. Hind coxal lobe yellow, short, narrow, dorsally curved. Posterior face of hind femur with elongate, basal, double to triple row of peglike setae, more distally with small rounded lobe (Figs 63–64). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 brown, tergites 2–6 mostly yellow, with small lateral darker markings. Venter of abdomen yellow, with few longer setae on segment 5. Male terminalia dark brown, cercus brown.

Distribution. Known from a single site in Peru.

Derivation of specific epithet. Named for the type locality.

Holotype. ♂, PERU: Madre de Dios: Avispas, 10–20.ix.1962, L. Peña, 400 m [LACM ENT 240035] (CNCI).

Dohrniphora fulleri sp. n.

(Figs 65–66)

Species recognition. This species is distinguished from others of the D. metatarsalis group by the group of basal setae, followed by a distally tapering concavity. Some other, non- D. metatarsalis -group species, such as D. incisuralis and D. nebulisilvensis, have a similar hind femur, but differ in the shape of the concavity, pattern of peglike setae, and lack of enlarged foretarsomeres.

Description. Body length: 2.31–2.97 mm. Head: Frons brown, second row of setae straight. Flagellomere 1 round, unusually small, brown. Palpus of normal size, light brown. Thorax: Scutum light brown. Scutellum brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta one-half length of posterior seta. Pleuron whitish-yellow to light brown. Mean costal length 0.53 wing length, range 0.53–0.54. Halter yellow. Legs yellowish-brown. Forecoxa in lateral view whitish-yellow. Foretibia with 4 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres 1–3 enlarged, inflated. Midcoxa brown. Hind coxa whitish-yellow. Hind coxal lobe light brown, elongate, narrow, pointed ventrally. Posterior face of hind femur with basal, somewhat rectangular group of peglike setae; more distally with distally-tapering concavity (Figs 65–66). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 yellow, with faint brown transverse marking, tergites 2–6 yellow medially, anteriorly and posteriorly, dark brown laterally, with medial yellow area decreasing in every tergite posteriorly. Venter of abdomen whitish-yellow, with sparse setae. Male terminalia with epandrium yellowish-brown, hypandrium brown, and cercus yellow.

Distribution. Amazonian Colombia and Brazil.

Derivation of specific epithet. Named for our colleague Dr. Ed Fuller, who has collected many useful phorid specimens for us.
