SWAAG HFS19 Excavation Area 4
Description
**Hagg Farm, Swaledale
Community excavation with the Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology Group
July 2019**
The Area 4 trench aimed to investigate a small hilltop overlooking the Romano-British farmstead. LIDAR imagery suggested potential buried wall or enclosure remains, and a site recce earlier in 2019 noted flagging just below the turfline.
The excavation was undertaken by members of SWAAG, volunteers and students from Newcastle University and revealed the remains of what appears to be a flagged path, and a potentially related flagged area bordered with crinoidal limestone. Note many artefacts were recovered from this area, though Roman pottery was recovered from the overburden.
