Standing Stones of Stenness, Orkney

  • 1. none

Description

This Neolithic stone circle in located at the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. Only five of the original 12 stones survive - I've marks the missing stones with annotations 3-9. The three stone that survive to their original height measure between 4.5m and 5.2m high. Radiocarbon dating indicates that this stone circle was built shortly after 3000 cal BC, making it the oldest stone circle in Britain. The stone circle is surrounded by a henge (a bank with an internal ditch) the has a single entrance; the bank is just beyond the limits of the model.
