Josef Merhaut (1863-1907) was a Czech writer, journalist and theater critic.. Josef Merhaut is considered the founder of the Brno novel and the Brno short story. His first works are poems influenced by Jaroslav Vrchlický. The main part of his work takes up stories and novels, in which he naturally portrayed the national and social problems of life in Brno at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in which he reflected the experiences of his childhood in poverty.
