Carineta trivittata Walker 1858

Description

Carineta trivittata Walker, 1858a

Cicada trivittata Walker 1858a: 22 (Mexico).

Remarks. Uhler (1892) reports the species in his review of United States, Mexico, and Caribbean cicadas. Metcalf (1963c) misread the text and attributed the species to Brazil and Guiana. However, Uhler (1892) states the species is a Central American form extending into Mexico that is “quite different” from the form (Carineta) from Brazil, Guiana, etc. Therefore, the species is removed from the faunae of Guyana and Brazil since the incorrect reference in Metcalf (1963c) is the only one to attribute the species to these countries.

Distribution. The species should be in Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and Peru (Metcalf 1963c; Sanborn 2013, 2014, 2018b, 2019 a, 2020a, c) with the removal from Guyana and Brazil, This reduces the known Brazilian cicada fauna to 180 species (Nunes et al. 2023; Sanborn 2023).
