  • In July 2005, just a few months before Henry suffered his stroke, the Howdens participated in the beetle Bioblitz held at the Acadia National Park in Maine. Although slightly less mobile, Henry managed with Anne to set up traps and collect around the campsite. This was Henry and Anne' s last formal field trip; however, the last place Henry collected beetles was a small, forested park located about half a kilometer away from his retirement home. In early spring, he would go in his wheelchair with Anne to set up fermentation traps.
  • While Henry remained active in the scientific community, he only contributed to research projects in a collaborative manner in his final years, assisting with identifications or thoughts about taxonomic placements. His last research paper, as the second author on a paper by Francois Genier (Fig. 2) describing a new species of Onthophagus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) from Cuba (Genier and Howden 2014), was published only six days before his death.
