Poster ELLIPSE - ECOMONDO 2023

Challenge: Ensuring the efficient use of natural resources and enhancing the valorisation and management of the increasing volume of waste generated thus reducing the volumes of landfilled waste, decreasing soil degradation, groundwater pollution and methane emissions.

Solution: ELLIPSE aims to address the valorisation of two heterogeneous waste streams, slaughterhouse (bellygrass) and paper & pulp sludge, to produce cost-efficient PHAs for agricultural and personal care applications, by the co-processing with other organic wastes such as glycerol from the biodiesel industry and sludge from the dairy industry, as well as recovering nutrients to produce bio-based fertilisers.

Pilots: The ELLIPSE project i) applies a 4 phases methodology to expand the opportunities for the valorisation of bio-waste across all stages and across all sectors and meet the requirements of the products for personal care and agriculture industries, ii) reach the scalability and consumer acceptance of the target products.

Outcomes:

• Increased share of treated heterogeneous organic waste (OW) stream;
• Increased market share of bio-based products from OW streams;
• Increased acceptance of bio-based valorised solutions in the personal care and agriculture sectors;
• Increase knowledge about the use of digital tools for modelling and data management;
• To boost bio-based solutions production up to higher TRLs.
