Background

The thumb is considered the main digit of the hand due to its versatility of movement, size, position, independence and relationship with the other digits. There are multiple congenital anomalies of the first finger, including hypoplasia to varying degrees, being one of the most prevalent. The thumb is considered hypoplastic when any part of the ray, whether soft tissue or bone, is deficient or nonexistent. The main objective of thumb reconstruction should be to restore its cardinal actions: mobility, stability, sensitivity, length and appearance. Despite there being microsurgical options for reconstruction of the thumb in specialized third-level centers, thumbing of the index finger (to convert it into a support for opposition, pinching and gripping) continues to be a method of choice in centers that They do not have trained surgeons or the necessary resources to achieve this.
