A Story of Mathematics and Sports: Significant Events in the Evolution of a Trans Man

This autoethnographic narrative presents significant events during my journey into secondary mathematics teaching and coaching, concurrent with my life as a trans man. Masculinity, athleticism, and mathematics have been three of the most influential threads of my life, and I see them as interrelated. The goal of this autoethnography is to explore those connections and illuminate some aspects of masculinity that intrude into the field of mathematics education. I begin with my experiences as an elementary student athlete in the K-12 education system and then move the narrative into my diagnosis as a trans boy. Finally, I discuss the impacts that gender had on my teaching and coaching career once I decided to live authentically as a trans man—an identity that is currently under attack in particularly vicious ways.
