An Introduction to Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism

The book, 'An Introduction to Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism,' primarily seeks to elucidate the foundational studies of terrorism, its conceptual frameworks, and theoretical perspectives. This section also adopts a historical lens, tracing the evolution of terrorism on a global scale. The second segment scrutinizes four significant quandaries in terrorism studies that have confounded policymakers and researchers alike. Thus, the correlation between terrorism and poverty, the rationality or irrationality of terrorism, the relationship between terrorism and its lethality, and the Western-centric focus or geographical specificity of terrorism will be examined. The third segment addresses six pivotal issues in counter-terrorism. These include international and organizational cooperation in combating terrorism, the challenge of profiling and identifying terrorists in counter-terrorism operations, the confrontation with cyber-terrorism, the efficacy of decapitating terrorist organizations, the invincibility and perpetual nature of terrorism, and lastly, the prevalence of a holistic approach in counter-terrorism efforts. The fourth segment provides a cursory overview of terrorism in Iran. Given the extensive and independent nature of this topic, an effort has been made to present succinct yet informative content about terrorism in Iran, both pre and post-Islam, and during the first and second Pahlavi eras. A general reference to post-revolution terrorism in Iran and the categorization of terrorist groups into religious, political, and emergent sectors have been included. In the final segment of the book, less-explored topics in the realm of terrorism and counter-terrorism are highlighted, along with future trends in terrorism studies and the prospective trajectory of terrorism and counter-terrorism. Drawing from current global trends and the existing status of terrorist groups, an attempt has been made to project an image of future terrorists, signifying the new wave of terrorism.
