Nine predation events by snakes from the Chocó rainforest of Ecuador
Description
We report nine predation events by snakes of different species in the Chocó forest biome, north-western Ecuador. Two Leptodeira ornata captured adult individuals of Rhinella alata and Incilius coniferus, respectively. A Trachyboa boulengeri fed on an Astroblepus brachycephalus, while a frog of the genus Pristimantis was found in the stomach of a Pliocercus euryzonus. A Bothrops asper consumed a Leptodactylus sp. We also witnessed an Urotheca lateristriga regurgitating a squamate egg. We found a Coniophanes fissidens carrying a Leptodactylus sp. in its mouth. After separating the animals, the frog died, presumably due to the snake's venom. A large unidentified colubrid released a live, but injured and paralysed Diploglossus monotropis. Finally, a juvenile Boa imperator fed on a Chlorophanes spiza.
