  • 1. Instituto de Estudos de Literatura e Tradição, Universidade Nova de Lisboa

Description

ABSTRACT: The romancero significantly influenced Spanish literature in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. In addition to numerous works inspired by its stories and characters, quotes and allusions to romances were often interspersed within texts. María Goyri compiled nearly 1500 references to romances from this period, a collection that is part of the Romancero Archive of the Menéndez Pidal Foundation. Taking this inventory as a starting point, we will study the allusion to romances in Spanish literature between the 15th and 17th centuries through descriptive statistics. We will examine which periods, writers, genres, and works made more and less use of this resource, which themes, romances, and verses were more popular, and to what extent verses were reformulated formally and semantically in their new literary contexts.

Keywords: Romancero, Middle Ages, Spanish Golden Age, María Goyri, Ramón Menéndez Pidal, Intertextuality, Descriptive statistics.
