MATLAB as a Service on INFN Cloud

Description

MATLAB is a numerical computation software developed and distributed by MathWorks that enables a user to perform advanced mathematical and scientific calculations and can be used to solve problems in mathematics, physics, engineering, and life sciences. In particular, it offers a wide range of functions, supporting computation on GPUs, manipulation and simplification of mathematical equations, but also the design of electronic and control systems. It is therefore a framework that can satisfy various use cases required by the experiments and projects that collaborate with INFN. For this reason, INFN has decided to invest funds for the purchase of unlimited MATLAB licenses.

Jupyter is an open-source web-based interactive computing environment that allows users to write and run code in Python, R, Julia, and many other programming languages, as well as create interactive visualizations and graphs. It is therefore a service that lends itself very well to a cloud-type environment and is currently widely used by the communities of users who have access to INFN Cloud.

MATLAB can be integrated with Jupyter Notebook to run MATLAB code within the Jupyter interface, or through MATLAB's native web interface. A first but effective development has recently been carried out to obtain the instantiation of MATLAB through the Jupyter services and the storage solutions offered by INFN Cloud.

This contribution shows how a user can use the service in PaaS mode through INFN Cloud and was presented in the ICT Services track of INFN CCR Workshop 2023.
