Ecosystem 16: High Tide Roosts in the Wadden Sea

A Review of Bird Distribution, Protection Regimes and Potential Sources of Anthropogenic Disturbance.

In this 2003 publication, the report of the Wadden Sea Plan project 34 (WSP § 9.2.1) regarding high tide roosts in the trilateral Wadden Sea is presented. The Wadden Sea Plan, which was adopted at the Governmental Wadden Sea Conference in Stade in 1997, entails besides common policies and measures also projects and actions of the concerned countries for their joint effort to fulfil the already agreed trilateral targets. Regarding birds, these targets are ‘favourable conditions for migratory and breeding birds: a favourable food availability; a natural breeding success; sufficiently undisturbed roosting and moulting sites; natural flight distances‘. Projects on roosting and moulting sites as well as coordinated management for herbivorous species are included in the Wadden Sea Plan. On the basis of project outlines, compiled by the Joint Monitoring Group of Migratory Birds (JMMB), the different investigations were carried out by lead countries with the support of the JMMB.
