Analysis code for "Investigating the Relationship Between Sea Surface Temperature and the Mechanical Efficiency of Tropical Cyclones"

Description

This repository contains the analysis code used to derive the results presented in Régibeau-Rockett et al. (in review): "Investigating the Relationship Between Sea Surface Temperature and the Mechanical Efficiency of Tropical Cyclones". The code descriptions are as follows: 

- get_input_sounding_data.py can be used to derive the vertical profiles of potential temperature, water vapor mixing ratio, and x- and y- wind speed from our RCE simulations. 

- get_input_sounding_PI.py and get_input_sounding_tropopause.py are designed to obtain the values of the potential intensity, potential-intensity derived kinetic energy, and  the tropopause height and temperature in the same RCE simulations

- Find_Vmax_RMW.py obtains a timeseries of the maximum azimuthal wind speed at 10m and the radius of maximum azimuthal winds at 10m from the axisymmetric simulations 

- Get_time_window.py finds the 'realistic' and 'single-eyewall' periods for all axisymmetric simulations

- MAFALDA_fixed_domain.ipynb performs the MAFALDA analysis, and calculates non-MAFALDA-derived quantities, for the single-eyewall periods from all axisymmetric simulations. Additionally, this notebook contains the code used to create figures S4 and S5.

- MAFALDA_manywindows.py performs the MAFALDA analysis, and calculates non-MAFALDA-derived quantities, for the realistic periods from all axisymmetric simulations

- MAFALDA_parceltests.py performs the MAFALDA analysis, and calculates non-MAFALDA-derived quantities, for the selected 2-day periods from the axisymmetric simulation with 500 parcels

- MAFALDA_plots.py prints the trends and associated p-values in all MAFALDA- and non-MAFALDA-derived quantities from both the single-eyewall and realistic periods.

- Paper_plots.py makes all plots presented in the main text except figure 4.

- Parcel_plots.py makes figure 4 from the main text.

- Supp_plots.py makes figures S1-S3.
- MAFALDA_Louter_tests.py and MAFALDA_Louter_plots.py can be used to verify the sensitivity of the single-eyewall periods results to the outer radius

- MAFALDA_Louter_tests_2.py and MAFALDA_Louter_plots_2.py can be used to verify the sensitivity of the realistic periods results to the outer radius
