ABSTRAKT

Artykuł opisuje powstanie i pierwsze lata działalności Centrum Humanistyki Cyfrowej Instytutu Badań Literackich PAN.

ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH:

"Digital humanities centre; a manual"

This paper discusses the founding phase and first three years of existence of the Digital Humanities Centre at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CHC). It was founded in October 2013 as the first digital humanities centre in Poland, serving as a common ground for literary researchers, archivists, librarians and administrative personnel. The aims of the centre are to (1) integrate various digital projects within the Institute by providing an interface between scholars and IT professionals, (2) coordinate large, cross-institutional projects in the field of Polish Studies, (3) implement state-of-the-art standard in digital philology, (4) foster international collaboration.

In the first three years of operation CHC has managed to complete an inventory of the Institute’s digital projects and prepare a strategy for the digital development. It has managed to launch several successful projects, including Polish Studies Newsletter (biuletynpolonistyczny.pl), a specialist portal ran in cooperation with over 30 institutions to provide up-to date information on current events in Polish studies; New Panorama of Polish Literature (nplp.pl), a modern multimedia tool for the publication of research findings as interrelated specialist monographs containing a broad range of multimedia material; it has also received a substantial infrastructural grant for development of the network infrastructure.

CHC has also been active in disseminating digital humanities tools and methods to scholarly community by organizing (often in collaboration) various workshops and tutorials. The Centre has also been active in the digital humanities networks as an observer at NeDiMAH (Network for Digital Methods in the Arts and Humanities) or participant in activities conducted by Work Groups of DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) and the Polish branch of CLARIN (Common Language Resources & Technology Infrastructure). Most notably CHC was actively involved in establishing DARIAH-PL consortium and has initiated a Digital Philology Work Group within it.

This paper uses the example of CHC to focus on four factors, which – in author’s opinion – are crucial for the successful development of a digital humanities centre 1) strong institutional support; 2) potential of individual members; 3) interinstitutional cooperation; 4) funding. Main threats such centres have to face are also addressed, mainly: 1) sustainability;  2) lack of recognition for the DH projects; 3), grantosis, 4) lack of funding 5) overfunding.
