Description
This article analyzes the consumption of tobaco in the Order of San Francisco in the region of Asturias, to the end of the Modern Age and the beginning of the Contemporary Age. The snuff was discovered and obtained in the American territories of the Crown of Castile. It is an exotic and precious product whose consumption will be reduced initially and will increase throughout the centuries of modernity gradually. The Order of St. Francis had a close relationship with the dissemination and production of tobaco in american territory, especially in the area of Paraguay, and there is a strong link between the Order and its production, mainly from the eighteenth century. Evidence of this relationship of the Order with the production and consumption of snuff the supposed presence of tobaco in the pantry of much of masculine franciscan centers in Asturias, in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.
