Ivan Kavaleridze's Experiments and Search for Film Language in His First Speakie, «Koliivshchyna» (1933)

The purpose of the article is to reveal the creative contribution of Ivan Kavaleridze to the development of the art of screen direction and to analyze Ivan Kavaleridze’s experiments and search for film language in order to create a complete piece of screen work. The methodology of the research consisted in the historical-chronological analysis of historical and art processes, comparative-theoretical analysis of art and historical sources, biographical analysis, empirical-analytical analysis of creative work of the artist, which allows for integral exploration of I. Kavaleridze’s creative method in the context of the trends and searches of the art of his time, and the influence on artistic culture. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the consideration of the origins and development of Ivan Kavaleridze’s mastership as a director in the context of the development of Ukrainian film art. Conclusions. It was proved that the artist’s creative work still remains an unexplored page of the history of national culture and needs a deep rethink today, rejecting obsolete ideological definitions and principles of interpretation. The school of Ukrainian historical and musical film became the quintessence of Ivan Kavaleridze’s experiments and search for film language.
